CHAPTER 19

Michael wondered if it would be too soon for him to phone Odelia Kingsley and ask if she’d had the opportunity to speak with Officer Sarah Flunk yet. Probably it was. And so he told himself to be patient. He had checked Mrs. Kingsley’s columns and articles on the Gazette website, and she struck him as a sensible and conscientious type of person, so he was sure that if she made a promise, she intended to keep it. And wasn’t that what these reporters did? Bring sundered hearts together? He could be mistaken, but the ‘Dear Gabi’ column in the paper probably was also written by Mrs. Kingsley, and that was full of people asking questions about how to approach a person they liked. Gabi always gave great advice, he felt. And as he sat there, reading a letter written by ‘Pining Heart,’ he suddenly got a bright idea.

Why didn’t he write a letter to Gabi and ask her to help him win Officer Flunk’s heart? Maybe Sarah Flunk would even read it and know it was him and be so touched that she would instantly get in touch with him and suggest that they start dating.

And so it was that he set about writing his very first letter to Dear Gabi. The problem was that he had never been much of a literary man, and even at school, his English teacher had suggested that he would never be able to read and write properly and might as well give up. But giving up wasn’t in his dictionary, especially when it concerned his future family life.

And as he sat there thinking of how to start a letter to Gabi, his mother walked in. “What are you up to now?” she asked. “Don’t you have cows to milk and hay to shift?”

“Yes, ma,” he said. “But first, I want to write this letter to Gabi.”

“Gabi? Who’s Gabi? Have I met her?”

“Gabi is a person who gives advice,” he explained. “She works for the Gazette, and you can ask her any question you want, and she’ll answer it.” He turned his computer screen so she could see.

His mother bent over and stared at the screen for a moment. “Oh, but I know who writes that column. It’s that Vesta Muffin woman.”

He gave his mother a dumbfounded look. “Who’s Vesta Muffin?”

“Well, she’s the chief of police’s mom. Alec Lip?”

“And how do you know this?” He had always figured that the identity of these agony aunts was supposed to be a strict secret.

“She told me herself,” said his mom. “I once sent in a letter, see, asking for advice. So when I met her at the grocery store, she said she wasn’t going to respond, since my question was stupid and she didn’t feel I deserved an answer.” She shook her head. “Talk about the nerve of the woman. I mean, really.”

“What was the question?” he asked, wondering now if he should write his own question or not even bother.

“Oh, nothing important,” said his mom with a wave of the hand.
